I think the part of this article that stood out to me most was the section on "streamlining" translation. Copeland describes feeling a bit anguished when the editor of Grotesque made deletions to the translation—even going so far as to eliminating characters entirely. I find the concept of "streamlining" translation as a whole to be interesting in the context of our class.
We've spent so much time discussing the need for a translation to be as accurate to the text as possible. For example—the "translator as a counterfeiter" analogy. As translators our role is to convey the text exactly how the author intended for it to be conveyed. And yet, the concept of "streamlining" to the point where entire characters are omitted seems counterintuitive. I find this contrast to be a bit paradoxical. But it's true that maybe the removal of these scenes and characters actually helps the English-speaking reader understand the text as the author meant it to be understood. It's a fine line that I think could be explored more.
