"A translator who finds it rewarding to traverse the perilous interlingual terrain each day feels a sense of challenge and professional fulfillment from taking the meaning of translation into new territory, making it a professional art rather than a clerical technique."
This quote from the Riggs article entitled Notes from Interlingual Hell: The Translation of Essays and Journalistic Prose, really stuck out to me. For the majority of the article, Riggs is describing translation as a laborious, fatiguing task that one simply can't wait to finish-- that once the foundational work is complete, a translator will happily shove the remainder of the work onto editors and rewriters. However, in the final lines, Riggs describes the most integral piece of their school of thought: a sense of fulfillment is what one needs in order to truly excel in this field. Through the titles, the metaphors, the quotes, the restructuring-- a good translator is one who does all of this and finds it rewarding instead of tiring.
